41st Annual Concert shifts gear and venue

Our spiritual home is the iconic Tabernacle Chapel in Morriston. However, for a number of reasons, this year, we needed to seek out an alternative venue at very short notice. What a great venue we found ourselves in – The Great Hall, Bay Campus at Swansea University. With our Guest artists, Kerry Ellis from London’s West End, and Liam J. Edwards (LARS and S4C’s Y Llais) we entertained an audience of approx. 450. Another great evening was had!

New Vice President Henry Gilbert

July 11th saw the Choir give its final concert as Morriston RFC Male Choir at All Saints Church Oystermouth, Mumbles. We were joined by members of Oystermouth Primary School Choir, and several up and coming young stars from the Loud Applause Rising Stars (LARS) organisation under their leader Cerith Owens. The concert was a fundraiser for Heartbeat Trust and their founder Henry Gilbert (seen on left with Choir Chairman Duncan Lewis). Former High Sheriff of West Glamorgan, Henry Gilbert founded the Heartbeat Trust UK following a dramatic incident. At the end of this historic Concert, Choir Chairman invited Mr. Gilbert to become one of a small number of Vice-Presidents of the new Morriston Male Choir / Côr Meibion Treforys.

Ireland Tour – October 2025

We travelled to the Emerald Isle and sang at three really enjoyable Concerts. Fri 25^th October in St.Brigid’s Cathedral, Kildare with Dublin Welsh MVC. We then moved on to Cavan on Mon 27^th to be joined by Cavan RFC MVC. Our final Concert was at St.Peter’s Church of Ireland in Drogheda, when we were joined by Drogheda MVC. A great time was had by all with trips to Belfast, Dublin and other places in between concerts. In the photo below we are joined by Drogheda MVC in a joint rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

Back home to the Principality Stadium

One of the great highlights for myself, and I guess for most of the choristers, was to be invited by the WRU, to sing on the pitch, prior to the Wales v Italy game in this year’s Six Nations Tournament. What a day it was. We were marshalled into the tunnel, where we joined with Cowbridge Male Choir, for a run-through of the items we were to sing, in front of a crowd of 69,775. Of course, what took most work, was getting our tongues around the words (and the rhythm) of the Italian Anthem. Phew, that was hard work. We then moved to another part of the subterranean world beneath the stadium, where the two choirs sang as the Welsh team arrived off their coach. The absolute high point, though, was marching proudly onto the hallowed turf itself – what a great honour. We were led by MD Haydn James, and whilst for many of us, it was our first time, for Haydn it was his last. It was a day of history making, because Wales won 31 – 17. Prior to this, the last game Wales won was in 2023 – a long time ago. I think we were clearly a talisman. For those in charge of choral singing prior to an International at the Principality – we are available, if called upon. Of course, after the game, we all then went next door, to the home of Cardiff Blues (Cardiff Arms Park) Clubhouse, for a very well earned few drinks – and yes, more singing, with our new found Cowbridge MC friends.

New Name – Same Traditions

The Choir returns to practice on Wednesday September 2nd at the familiar surroundings of Seion Newydd chapel, Clase Road, Morriston from 7-9pm. New choristers are always welcome. Although the Choir name has changed, the traditional sound of the Choir remains at the forefront of what we do, and what we stand for – that will never change. Our new identity does mean a change of uniform and our new blazers and choir tie will be on show for the first time at St. Samlet’s church, Llansamlet on the evening of Friday, September 25th (doors open 6:30). Tickets are on sale now (see poster here for details on how to get your tickets). We hope to see as many of you there as possible as we launch the Choir into its next chapter.

Bereavements

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Glyn Thomas. Glyn, a stalwart of many choirs was a fine bass singer and we mourn his passing dearly. R.I.P. Glyn.

We also said goodbye to former chorister John Hounslow who sang with the Choir for over 30 years in the baritone section. R.I.P. John.

As this is being written, it is with a heavy heart that I must report the passing of our Deputy Music Director, Helen Wyn. Helen last performed with the Choir at the 41st Annual Concert in May, conducting the Choir in two items. It is perhaps fitting that I invite you to listen to the Choir singing Ave Maria, one of the pieces that Helen conducted last May. Our deepest condolences to her husband Eirian, and daughter Fllur on their sad loss. The funeral takes place August 15th at Ebenezer Chapel, Brynamman at 12:00. R.I.P. Helen.
